High blood pressure - an important warning signal

High blood pressure, also known as 'hypertension,' may remain unnoticed for a long time, as it does not show any other clear symptoms. Therefore, regular checks are quite important in order to prevent serious illnesses.
If left untreated over a long time, high blood pressure can have very serious consequences on the heart, the blood vessels and the kidneys. Some of the diseases on these organs can be life-threatening and this is why it is crucial to keep an eye your blood pressure. If the high pressure persists it is important to consult a physician.

Diseases that can develop as a consequence include arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the vessel walls due to plaque formation), cardiac insufficiency, heart attack and renal insufficiency. However, it doesn't have to come to this if measures are taken to treat high blood pressure. These measures will not only include antihypertensive drugs, but also the diagnosis of the underlying causes and the treatment.

There are several factors that can cause hypertension and other serious problems to the body. These include smoking, lack of exercise, stress, excessive salt consumption, overweight and alcohol consumption.

There are also cases in which hypertension is a hereditary condition, or is associated to the changes women experience during menopause.

If the risk factors exist and the regular monitoring at home of the blood pressure shows it is high, then a medical consultation is absolutely recommended. This way the doctor will be able to get more accurate information and take the necessary measures in order to prevent serious consequences.
