What exactly is 'cognitive performance'

'Cognitive performance' sounds complicated, but is easy to break down. In fact, we encounter it every day and should not forget to also train it.

The perhaps difficult to understand term is based on the word 'cognitive'. This refers to any process by which knowledge is acquired. The acquisition of knowledge is in itself not straightforward, because it includes among other things the perception and intuition. Thus cognitive performance is our ability to acquire and use this knowledge.

We use it every day, but are hardly aware of it. Even a relatively simple activity, such as climbing stairs, is a complex system of brain-based skills. We're just not aware of it. We use our perception via our senses, we see, hear, smell, and taste. We use our intuition and use motor skills. We arrive at a point of decision making and activate our language skills countless times per day. - All of these elements are part of cognition, which should not be confused with our current state of knowledge. Much rather, it refers to our ability to leverage our acquired knowledge in order to act purposefully. Cognitive skills can also be measured by certain tests and can then provide a picture of a human's general neural health.

Since cognitive performance is not a static skill, it must also be encouraged and trained. It forms an important part of mental health and the healing process in depression. Patients whose cognition does not increase during treatment have a higher risk of reverting to depression, even if they continue to take medication.

But how can one positively influence the cognitive performance? This question also arose in the investigation of the effect of light on our brain. In the wake of a series of studies, ranging from reaction speed tests in professional athletes to the attention performance of university students to decision-making and management functions in patients suffering from winter depression, it was concluded that light therapy via the ear canal is capable of increasing the cognitive performance.

Considering how important light is to our life in general, it is not surprising that it is also essential for our brain. Just like a healthy diet, enough sleep and exercise, enough light throughout the year is a basic requirement for the health of the body and soul.
