Shift work and poorly lit work places

Numerous health problems, which are demonstrably caused by lack of light, or a shifting of the sleep-awake cycle, have made it clear: Light certainly carries a huge significance to our well-being and our performance. After we spend most of our time at work or indoors, it lies close to consider possible solutions by means of improving the lighting conditions.

How to best utilize light to avoid the negative consequences of lack of daylight or shift work? Many night shift workers report negative experiences with exposure to excessive light during the night. Particularly late night shift work forces the body to work contrary to its internal biological clock. The most common reported problems include insomnia or excessive sleepiness, anxiety, irritability or even depression. Shift workers are exposed an increased risk of serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and obesity.

Studies which examined the possibility of adapting the circadian rhythm of people to working at night by means of light stimulation, sunglasses in the morning on the way home, as well as through control of sleep patterns on non-working days already exist. To a certain extent, these changes helped, but it was also clear that it is almost impossible to perfectly align the circadian rhythm to night shift work. Especially not if people must switch between day and night, as is so often the case.

Furthermore, even a regular eight hour work shift during the day can pose a challenge to our well-being. The working environment is usually too dimly lit. This leads to eyestrain, headache, a bad sitting posture and accidents. In the longer term, a lack of appropriate illumination of the workplace leads to lost productivity, reduced job satisfaction and an increased level of stress.

The lighting at the workplace can even affect sleep. In this case, light therapy in the morning, shortly after waking up, is recommended. A morning dose of 9-12 minutes with the Valkee daylight device offers a simple alternative to the lack of daylight resulting from poorly-illuminated work places. It is generally a good first step to find out how the workers perceive the lighting at the workplace and to improve it accordingly. The lighting should not be too bright either, because that can lead to eye irritation and headaches.
