Why is sunlight so important to life on Earth

We take the daily sunrise and the presence of light for granted. And yet, it is actually very special, that our planet receives sufficient light and heat from the sun. It is also interesting that so many creatures on this planet depend on precisely this light.

The sun is absolutely essential to life on Earth. No wonder that many creatures synchronize their activities with the day/night rhythm. Humans are no exception. The daytime don't just affect hormones, but also organs in the human body. In addition to the circadian rhythm, which closely matches 24 hours, the monthly and seasonal rhythms are also of importance.

But lets focus on sunlight: the power of the sun's rays becomes apparent when looking at how the sun breaks down synthetic materials and bleaches colors. When sun rays meet the eyes in the morning, they are clearly perceived by the light-sensitive components in the body and specific messages are forwarded to the central nervous system. This natural 'alarm clock' causes hundreds of reactions to take place in the body. The number of monoamines - major neurotransmitters of the central nervous system - increases. Hormones and their activity in the body are also synchronized with the sun. A successful synchronization of these activities is a precondition for good performance and well-being.

Conversely, darkness around us enables the so-called night hormones or melatonin. Its levels significantly increase at night and reach their peak in the early hours of the morning. Consequently, exposure to strong light pollution in the evening can have a very negative effect on sleep and the body.

The lack of natural light in winter can significantly affect well-being. This is evident in shift workers, regardless of the season. Their day wake rhythm is totally messed up due to their exceptional working hours. Affected persons can show abnormalities in the melatonin secretion, possibly resulting in serious diseases. A disruption of the day and night rhythm can lead to wide-ranging metabolic disorders: the fat values worsen, blood pressure increases and obesity and mood swings are known consequences.

Thus it is all the more important not to take light for granted, but to become aware of its significance. One must also distinguish between artificial light and light of daylight quality. Conventional room lighting merely reaches a small fraction of the strength of daylight. It is especially important to consider this during the winter, when brightly-lit office spaces mask the lack of daylight. The body itself cannot fooled as easily and recognizes the difference between a 100 Lux lamp and a 10,000 Lux lamp.
