Raynaud's Syndrome.

Also known as 'Raynaud's disease' or 'white finger disease', Raynaud's disease is a relatively common yet strange disease. It is named after the physician Morris Raynaud, who was the first to describe this circulatory disorder of the hands. The strange thing about Raynaud's Syndrome is that the cold, and emotional stress both have a part to play.

The disease shows up in the hands in three phases, each of which has its own colouration. In the first two phases, paroxysmal vascular spasm occurs which results in a reduced blood supply, pain in the fingers and stiffening of the finger joints. The skin turns white, or blue. In the third phase, excessive blood flows back into the hands, causing reddening, along with a strong itching and tingling. It can also affect the feet, or sometimes the nose, and other body parts. In every case the disease is symmetrical, that is, it affects both hands, feet or ears. In addition to avoiding cold in the extremities and stress-reducing measures, steps to improve the blood circulation processes have also proved successful. Electrotherapy by TENS has also proved successful, since this form of therapy relieves pain and improves circulation, which is important in Raynaud's disease. The blood circulation throughout the body, but especially in the treated area, is stimulated by the application of TENS.
