How to find relaxation

The most common advice for stress relief is to get relaxation. Nowadays in our society, even the young are already facing daily stress or emotional stress, so tips on how to relax are more and more in demand. However, there are two things to emphasize: first, there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to relaxation techniques, and second, relaxation is highly recommended even when there is no actual stress.

Integrating relaxation and healthy breaks in everyday life improves significantly the well-being. This is necessary because we are constantly facing pressure on the different aspects of our life: it is either the family, the education, the profession or the social environment. Stress also means that the body will suffer the consequences. The body reacts clearly with stress-related tension in the neck, headache, or even stomach ulcers. Therefore, it is important to find ways and methods to help the body relax as soon as possible. With a lack of healthy breaks and relaxation, our body will suffer consequences such as chronic overload and the weakening of the immune system. A regular change between tension and relaxation, however, can strengthen the immune system.

What is happening inside the body during relaxation?

Practising relaxation not only helps to regulate the breathing and heart rhythm, but also to lower the blood pressure and to reduce the muscle tension. If the exercise also helps to release tension in the neck and shoulder area, this will relieve headaches or back pain. With every relaxation exercise, it is important to focus on breathing more slowly and deeply. Thus, the body will get more oxygen and the soul will calm down, because the head will be mainly focused on breathing. A beautiful "side effect" of relaxation is that you will be more aware of your body and its reaction. If you manage to get your mind free of thoughts, and to concentrate purely on breathing, a quiet surrounding or even pleasant smells or music, you will see that after this mental break you will find it easier to solve problems or difficult tasks. The concentration also benefits from breaks and relaxation.

The methods range from relaxation with music and breathing exercises to massage or autogenic training. People should find the right method according to their needs or problems. Some prefer to be more active, as for example with practising Progressive muscle relaxation. Others relax better while being completely passive, such as when having a massage. Many of these methods are scientifically tested and their effects proven. Active relaxation exercises have an immediate and positive effect on the organism. Other methods have an intellectual approach and offer relaxation through meditation or imagination exercises. Due to the diversity, it is very likely that everyone will find a method suitable to their needs. You can gain relaxation even while walking, during practising certain sports, listening to music or simply while breathing more slowly and deeply. Anyone who wishes to start and learn the simple procedures will soon discover how easy it is to integrate a relaxing break into everyday life. In addition, there will be no lack of motivation once you see the effects: more satisfaction, serenity, tranquillity and a clear mind.
