5 ways to make work in front of a computer more ergonomical

Walk through your office and take a good look at the workstations: the chairs, the organization of work trays, access to files, location of the phones and the setup of the computer monitors, keypads and mice. Chances are good that every station will have a unique layout to accommodate workflow and maximize efficiency of the individual who spends the majority of their day focused on their core duties. The ergonomics of the station are rarely given adequate consideration, however, resulting in eyestrain, repetitive stress injuries and chronic back and neck pain.

Many workers' compensation firms offer specialists who will evaluate the individual workstations of their insureds to minimize the risk for repetitive stress injuries. The focus of most of these surveys is the computer station and hardware and includes recommendations of affordable solutions to the most common problems:

1. Monitor height: The properly adjusted monitor will allow the user to observe their computer screen at eye level. This reduces the strain on the neck and shoulders and allows the user to perform their duties in a relaxed body position. A monitor can easily be raised with platforms that raise the monitor a couple of inches at a time. The platforms stack, and can accommodate even the tallest employee.

2. Chair design: Many employers invest in cushy, aesthetically pleasing chairs that offer little support as a task chair. Proper task chairs are firm, offer adjustable back support and hydraulic height adjustment. When seated with feet firmly on the ground legs should project at a 90-degree angle from the hip and 90-degree angle at the knee. Arms should rest comfortably at the sides and the arms should maintain a 90-degree bend at the elbow when engaged with the keyboard and mouse. Arms on task chairs often encourage slumping, which puts additional strain on the back.

3. Keyboard: Many affordable ergonomic keyboards are available from office supply wholesalers and retailers. The ergonomic board usually has a softly curved design that allows the hands to rest comfortably without bending the wrists up, down, in or out. They should also include a side keypad for technicians who routinely enter numerical data.

4. The wireless mouse is one of the most beneficial changes in computer hardware in some time. It affords freedom of movement without working around a cable and many offer roller balls that are manipulated by fingertip or thumb to alleviate the need to constantly roll the mouse to maneuver through a document or project.

5. Keyboard trays have long been used to increase the flexibility of the workstation to accommodate users of different heights and body dynamics. The trays are easily attached to the desk or work platform and rotate up and out to adjust the height and angle of the keyboard for the user.

In addition to these basics, lighting should always be considered when one is seeking to improve the ergonomics of a computer station. Placement of lights and even the luminescence and soft or bright white enhancement of lamps can increase glare or impede visibility.
