Which Thermometer Should I Choose?

There is hardly any home that can do without a thermometer, since it is an important tool for monitoring the development of an illness. When it comes to choose one, it should be considered, where the measurement will be taken and also whether it is convenient to avoid physical contact. There are other differences such as the duration of the measurement and the number of memory slots.

When choosing a new clinical thermometer, several questions could arise: Should it be a multi-functional thermometer that not only measures the body temperature, but also the room temperature or the temperature of surfaces such as baby bottles for example? Or would a simple digital thermometer with oral, axillary or rectal measurement be suitable? Shall it be a non-contact thermometer or not? Depending on this last question, the thermometers can be separated into two main groups. The non-contact thermometers cost somewhat more and use infrared for the measurement. They have the great advantage that you don't need to wake up the patient for measuring his/her temperature and they allow an absolutely hygienic measurement as required in hospitals. These infrared thermometers usually offer additional measurement options of other temperatures.
With the classical digital thermometers you can only measure the body temperature. In this case an important aspect may be the flexibility of the tip, as it is offered by the very affordable Samsung SDT-60F or the Medisana FTF. A big advantage of these slender thermometers is certainly the extra-large display, as you can find it with the Omron i-Temp. But there are also differences as far as the measurement periods are concerned, which generally last only seconds: 60 seconds with the Promed FTF or only 1 second with the Medisana FTO or the Medisana FTD. The latter is actually a thermometer for the ear or forehead and a test winner. Also, the Beurer FT45 completes the measurement with short contact of the forehead and in just 7 seconds.

What Other Special Features Are There?

Storage capabilities can also be very useful. Many digital thermometers save at least the last measured value. Others offer 9-10 memory spots, as the JFT60, FT65 or FT55. Outstanding in this case is the JFT90 with 60 memory spots. Most thermometers signalize the end of the measurement with a beep. Some offer in addition, a visual or audible fever alarm, which can be of further aid for the measurement and evaluation of the result. This is for example offered by the FT15. A special advantage of the multi-function thermometer Beurer FT70 is the language function. This can be very useful in case that the digital display is not sufficient because of vision problems.
If what you are looking for is a specially designed thermometer for children, then you will be happy to know that there are many options too. A pacifier thermometer as the Janosch by Beurer JFT22 for example, facilitates the measurement immediately. The JFT15-1 is another thermometer that is designed especially for the temperature measurement in children. It has a very flexible tip for convenient measurement and provides you with the measuring result after only 10 seconds.
