Hot Stone massage has been known for its curative and relaxing effect in many cultures since ages past. The ancient Greeks and Romans had Hot Stone massages in view of their curative action on muscular pain and injuries. In Eastern cultures, hot stones were used on acupuncture points and on the meridians.

The therapeutic application of heat has been practiced for hundreds of years in a host of healing arts. Ancient cultures used sweat lodges fueled by smoldering logs married with stones and covered over by earth to cleanse the body and stimulate healthy blood circulation. These exercises were generally limited to ceremonial use during the annual gathering of tribes, clans or honored visitors.

Healers have also used heat combined with herbs, salts, minerals and oils to immerse a stressed or injured body in therapeutic baths. The experienced hot stone massage therapist places the stones along the spine, on Chakras, or energy centers and in areas of trapped energy or trigger points of pain and muscle spasms. The client might recline upon the stone or the stones might be placed upon the resting body. While the heat of the stones seeps into the tissue the therapist uses larger hot stones and therapeutic oils or creams to massage the body's larger muscle groups. Stones make it possible for the therapist to impose deeper pressure on stubborn tissue to effectively break down the stress bonds that prevent the muscle tissue from relaxing.

As with the historic use of mud-packs and poultices fortified with herbs and essential oils, hot stones may be used to treat upper respiratory distress. Herbs and oils such as hyssop, sage and members of the mint family are renowned for their ability to ease sinus and lung congestion. The heat of the stones enhances the therapeutic effect of the organic elements. In this case the botanicals are applied directly to the skin and a cloth is placed over the skin to protect it from the heat of the stones. The heated stones are then placed strategically over the lungs and at the base of the throat. As the botanical fumes are released by the heat of the stones the client breathes slowly and deeply, opening congested breathing passages and speeding healing.

Hot stones can also be placed over organs or concentrated areas of lymphatic tissue to stimulate healing. Again, the therapist may use botanicals to enhance the work of the hot stones to stimulate organ or lymphatic activity and improve the body's natural function. Similarly, the stones may be placed over the abdomen for patients suffering from IBS, Crohn's Disease or other intestinal distress to ease cramping and help to regulate the contraction of muscles along the intestinal tract.
