Means and methods of compensating for the darkness in winter

The problem of shorter days and longer nights in winter is no longer a mere personal problem some small number of people experience. Lack of daylight during the dark winter months has been shown to lead to certain symptoms of winter depression, which in turn affect work performance. Municipalities in the northern hemisphere have now also begun striving for solutions on how to address the lack of sunlight.

The Norwegian town of Rjukan is a good example of particularly dark winter days. It is located in a Valley and surrounded by steep slopes on all sides, so that very little sunlight makes it there between September and March. Their solution was an artificial Sun. For this purpose, three rectangular mirrors were installed on the surrounding mountain peaks. By computer-controlled tilting of the mirrors in the right direction, the sunlight was reflected from outside of the Valley into the town's main square. Although the other places of the town remain in the shade, at least the residents have a central, sunny place.

The city of Umeå in northern Sweden receives similarly little sunlight. Here, the local electricity supply company had an idea on how to provide the inhabitants of the city with a useful energy kick during the dark season: Energy-boosting UV lamps have been installed at about 30 bus stops around the city. Thus the commuters got to enjoy free light therapy for several weeks while waiting for the bus!

The city of Melbourne in Australia, on the other hand, tried to compensate for the negative effects the cold winter months have on people's moods with weekly fireworks and free neon lights that were distributed to cyclists. The color and the light, which consequently ended up in the streets of Melbourne, will not only benefit the tourists, but also the local people. An additional safety advantage is that the cyclists are more visible.

The important significance of light can simply not be denied - no matter in which season.
