The effects of heat and light

We cannot imagine our world without heat or light. We can have a clearer idea if we compare how we feel on a cold, foggy November evening when there is only weak artificial street lighting around us, and how we feel on a bright and sunny summer morning with blue sky and a warm breeze. No wonder that the experts on the medical field thought about using heat and light to cure some of our body's ailments.

We can experience on a daily basis the direct effects of heat and light in our bodies. We make sure our body is always kept warm enough by wearing adequate clothes on dark winter days. We can also notice we feel more tired and with less energy than on sunny summer days. Heat not only gives us a feeling of security, it also helps us to relax. Therefore, infrared massagers are able to provide a deeper muscle relaxation compared to massagers without heat. Already the ancient Romans appreciated the healing effect of warm thermal baths, and the task that in the past used to be of heating bottles now is undertaken by electric blankets and heating pads with the touch of a button. We can feel the muscles relaxing with the effect of heat. The effect of light is much more difficult to capture or to measure. It is easier to show when there are already symptoms that can be treated with light. In certain cases depression can be caused by the lack of light during the dark winter months. People know this as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or "winter blues".

The body absorbs light not only through the eyes but also through the skin. It is important to provide the body regularly and in a moderate way with sunlight to stabilize the vitamin D production in the body during the winter months. The sunrays should reach at least hands and face. Light therapy lamps that send bright light through the eye to the brain have been proven to have a positive effect on winter blues, but there are also positive experiences of light therapy via the ear canal.

Light affects wellbeing and performance

Why is light so important for the body? It is important because it is connected and controls our 'internal clock'. The light gives our body the necessary information so that it will know if it is time to get up or to go to sleep. In each case, the body responds by producing different hormones. However, there are necessary phases for the body that should not be altered too much. Otherwise, it may happen that due to the lack of light during the day, the body releases the sleep hormone melatonin much too early, so that the melatonin level at night will be too low. Insomnia and fatigue could be the consequence.

There is even more power in light. Depending on the wavelength, light has also a certain effect on the skin. Special light therapy lamps are using this power, to treat skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis or aging skin. In nature, we find that light and heat often form an inseparable unit. This also applies to infrared lamps, which combine a particular light and the effect of heat. With infrared light, you can treat colds, but also muscle tension. It has the advantage that the surrounding air does not absorb the infrared rays. Therefore, no heat gets lost to the environment and all the infrared rays work on treating a specific area of the body.
