Sudeck’s Atrophy

Sudeck’s atrophy was first described by the surgeon Paul Sudeck. It refers to complications after fractures, sprains, burns or surgery on the arms and legs that manifest themselves in form of inflammations.

Other symptoms can be strong chronic pain, stiffening and paralysis. It is still not clear what exactly causes these symptoms. Very often the illness starts with burning pain, followed by swelling of the affected area. There may as well be a bluish or reddish coloration.

Depending on the circumstances, the affected joint can become stiff, which causes additional pain and makes the patient unable to move normally. When Sudeck’s atrophy is diagnosed, the chances to cure it are very high if the correct treatment is applied.

It is necessary to treat the inflammation and to apply physiotherapeutic measures to avoid stiffening and paralysis. TENS is a helpful alternative method for pain treatment. This scientifically proven and drug-free method uses stimulation through electric pulses. These pulses reach the nerves through electrodes applied on the skin. When stimulating the nerves the pain information is altered.

TENS also encourages the distribution of the happiness hormones, which also help reducing the pain. TENS therapy is carried out using a small, handy device that regulates the electric pulses. Patients can use the device themselves and apply the method at home as many times as necessary.
