How to Give Yourself a Sinus Massage?

Believe it or not, you don't always have to spend a lot of money on a professional massage. There are a number of techniques you can perform on yourself at home in order to temporary relieve symptoms of pain and discomfort. One of the most beneficial self-massage techniques a person can learn is a good sinus massage which will help to alleviate congestion due to colds or infections.

While this massage isn't a permanent fix, and while no massage replaces the advice of a trained physician or medical practitioner, this series of techniques will help you to relieve some of the pain and aggravation associated with your sinuses.

Before you get started, and before any type of massage, you should wash your hands with soap and hot water. Because you are massaging your face you will not need to use any sort of lotion or oil.

Simply begin by placing the fingers from both hands in the middle of your forehead and start moving them in small circles. Move outwards across your forehead until you reach your temples. Repeat the same procedure, but this time start at the base of your nose and work your way across your cheeks and up to your temples.

Next, gently place your fingers at the base of your eyebrow closest to the nose. You'll feel a tender point right on the bone above your eye. Gently apply pressure and hold it for approximately 15 seconds, releasing the pressure and repeating this process two more times. After you've finished, move your fingers along the edge of the eyebrow, and not far from the first point you'll feel a small indentation and another tender point. Repeat the process here three times as well.

At the base of your nose, on either side of the nostrils, you'll find another set of tender points. The worse your sinus congestion the more tender these points will feel, so apply pressure cautiously. Apply pressure at this point by using three intervals of 15 seconds each.

It's time to move back up to the top of your nose, applying pressure to the top of the ridge directly between your eyes. Gently work your way back down your face and feel for your cheekbones. Begin massaging the underside of the bone with very small, gentle circles. There are a number of nerves running under your cheekbone, so gentle caution is encouraged in order to avoid causing yourself pain or discomfort.

To finish up your sinus massage, you're going to start at the base of your jawbone, at the chin, and massage along the line of the bone all the way up to your ears. Repeat the process a few times and remember to relax while massaging. Stopping to yawn will help you remain relaxed throughout the entire process. Once you've finished massaging your jaw, end the massage by gently massaging the top of your head. Pay special attention to any tender points you feel during this process as well.

While a sinus massage isn't going to cure your ailment, it will do a lot to promote drainage and alleviate some of the pressure you may be feeling. Don't forget to contact your physician or medical practitioner for treatment, as massage can not replace medical care. In the meantime, use the sinus massage as often as you like before your appointment to alleviate the symptoms you are experiencing.
