Valkee Bright Light Headset Demonstrates Alleviation of Jet Lag Symptoms

The results of a study suggest that the Valkee bright light headset is also capable of reducing jet lag symptoms. After long haul flights, which involve a time lag of more than three hours, significant sleep problems and complaints can appear because the rhythm of the person's inner clock is altered. It is known that light influences the rhythm of our inner clock, therefore it becomes obvious to use light therapy methods when treating jet lag symptoms.

The manufacturer of the Valkee light therapy device had already pursued this idea for a while. They completed a placebo-controlled double-blind study - the first successful clinical field study of its kind with any medical device. It was a randomized, controlled study. Neither the investigator nor the participants knew about which person was assigned to which group (control or experimental group).

Study participants were 55 healthy volunteers, randomized into light treatment group and placebo group. The participants traveled by plane from Finland to North America and back, spending at least one week in North America before their flight back to allow their internal clock to adjust to the US time.

During the intervention period, which took place immediately after returning to Finland, participants received bright light or placebo exposure at pre-determined times. The effects on the jet lag symptoms caused by the interventions were evaluated by the same structured scales that were used in all seven jet lag field studies published in the last 15 years. In the bright light treatment group, the jet lag symptoms decreased faster than in the placebo group, with a statistically significant difference. The bright light group participants' recovery back to their baseline condition, measured before the flight, took on average only half as long compared to the placebo group.

"This is the first ever randomized, placebo-controlled and double-blinded light therapy study on alleviation of jet lag symptoms, and the results indicate that transcranial bright light given through ear canals decreases symptoms of jet lag," said MD, Ph.D. Jari Karhu, Medical Adviser at Valkee. "We are excited about the opportunity of alleviating jet lag symptoms of frequent business and holiday travelers, and look forward to further studies in the area."
