Check whether the batteries are exhausted or need to be replaced because they are too old.
Check that the electrodes are correctly attached to the skin. When using self-adhesive electrodes, the adhesive part of the electrodes will eventually wear off. In that case, you can apply a few drops of water on the gel layer, or you can replace the electrodes with new ones. Make sure to always clean and slightly moisten the skin before using the electrodes.
Carbon rubber electrodes or permanent electrodes are used with gel. Here too, the skin should be cleaned before using the TENS unit. Then apply a thin layer of gel onto the electrodes and place the electrodes on the skin. Permanent electrodes usually last for a very long time, but at some point they may be too old or damaged and should be replaced with new ones.
When placing the electrodes on the skin, make sure that they are not located too far apart. They should be placed around the pain centre, but relatively close together. Many TENS units come with instructions for use where there are pictures and detailled instructions on how to place the electrodes correctly on the body.
Another reason for the TENS device not showing any effect is that one of the cables connecting the electrodes to the unit might be damaged. Please check, and if this is the case, you can simply order a replacement cable for your device.
Why is my TENS unit not working?TENS therapy devices always include cables and electrodes. In addition, the device is operated either with batteries or via the mains adapter. If the TENS unit does not work or does not seem to have any effect, there might be several reasons for this.
