  • Description Silver coin Quilling Bird

    • With intricate details and complex patterns of rolled paper, this coin is a testament to the ancient art of quilling.
Quilling (also known as paper filigree) is a decorative art form that involves the rolling of strips of paper into various shapes and gluing them together to form artistic arrangements.

Some sources suggest that quilling has its roots in the ancient Egyptian period, however it is most commonly believed that this paper art technique began during the European Renaissance when people used quilling to decorate household items. This tradition was popular amongst members of the church - Italian and French nuns in particular - who would use the technique to decorate their Bibles and hymn books. Later, in the Georgian-era, quilling was a favourite pastime of bourgeois women. Even Jane Austen wrote about this decorative art in her novels!

    • Safe shopping: You can pay with invoice.
Women would spend hours rolling strips of paper into coils before “pinching” them to create different shapes and gluing them down onto the object of their choice. These most often included furniture, books, picture frames and storage or jewellery boxes.

We present to you the beautiful art of quilling on this .999 coin from the Cook Islands. This proof-like quality collectable coin depicts a colorful bird perched on a tree branch in decorative quilling design. In intricate color detail, this coin shows the complex folds of paper used to create the image, with the papers’ colors reflecting the detailed plumage of a bird sitting happily on a tree branch.

The coin’s outer edges are decorated with a design of growing vines and leaves. The colorful bird stands out against the shining silver background of the coin which is not unlike the materials which quilling is usually pasted upon, such as foil or flaked sea shells. An inscription that reads “2017 Quilling Art” is shown on the left hand side of the bird, while a tree is on the right. On the coin's other side is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as inscriptions of the coin’s place of origin and face value. Furthermore, this coin comes in a special wooden box decorated with colorful patterns inspired by this popular paper art tradition.
