Thoracic Spine Pain Syndrome

A sign for thoracic spine syndrome may be a dull, oppressive pain from the thoracic spine. Another indication is the hardening and pain on the muscles alongside the thoracic spine when applying pressure.

The thoracic spine consists of 12 vertebrae that form the central portion of the spine. Spinal changes can also result from poor posture or heavy loads but this does not immediately lead to pain. Certain changes in the intervertebral disks, joints or vertebrae can however, lead to significant acute or chronic pain.

A cause of acute thoracic spine pain syndrome can be a blockage of one or more vertebral joints. And chronic pain could be the result of a change in the discs. In some cases the cause is not so clear and even nervous reactions may appear.

It is possible to prevent this syndrome by avoiding poor posture, exercising regularly and training the muscles. When the symptoms appear and if the cause is because you are worn out, the treatment should focus on pain relief. In this case, TENS therapy can offer the much needed help. This kind of electric stimulation will be applied to the left and right area of the spine. The patients can apply the TENS therapy by themselves. However, it is best to have the help of a second person to place the electrodes on the back.
