It is attributed to a malfunction in the brain that causes various nerve cells to simultaneously emit abnormal stimuli or signals. It is also known as 'seizure disorders' because epilepsy manifests itself by heavy cramps with convulsions. Some other symptoms include foaming at the mouth and heavy breathing.

30 different forms of epilepsy have been identified. Under certain circumstances, it is possible for a person to suffer an epileptic seizure only once in his/her whole life. Medical professionals only use the term epilepsy if the seizures occur repeatedly and at least twice a year.

Usually, during an epileptic seizure, the person does not respond and shows disorientation and delayed responses. Depending on the intensity of the seizure, the person could be fully or partially conscious. An epileptic seizure may last only a few seconds or minutes, however, due to the suddenness and intensity, there is a high risk that the person could get injured or in danger.

In certain cases it is possible to treat the cause of epilepsy, but the patients will need a long term treatment with anti-epileptic drugs. In addition to these measures, TENS treatment has also proved to be helpful. The aim of TENS is to reduce the pain and to relax the muscles that are clenched in an unnatural way.
